PPTP port explained
IP protcol 47 is being used by PPTP. It is used for GRE. That means General Routing Encapsulation.
A mistake that is made often when firewalls are configured is that PPTP port 1723 is
opened to allow establishement of connections. In this case, next to opening that particular pptp port,
it is important to forward GRE protocol 47. (GRE47).
People often forget to forward GREP 47. Herewith you deny port data access.
Some OS‘s use PPTP port ping tools. Those tools verify the opening of both PPTP ports.
